Important: This formula counts potential one-to-one paths. It does not mean every team member should communicate directly with every other person.

For the worked example and reasoning, read the related study guide.

How it works

The formula n(n - 1) / 2 counts unique one-to-one pairs. Compare an original team with an expanded team to see both totals and the number of potential channels added.

Example to try

An eight-person team has 28 potential channels. An eleven-person team has 55, so adding three people creates 27 additional potential channels.

Read the result

Potential channels describe coordination complexity. They do not mean that every person should communicate directly with every other person.
